Why do golf balls have dimples

It is claimed that dimpled balls travel up to 4 times farther than smooth-surfaced golf balls. Scientists used aerodynamics t help explain this phenomena. The dimples redirect more air pressure behind the golf ball rather than in front of it, and in this way reuces the drag and forces the ball to go farther distance.
